All of our Wildflower Seed Mixtures may be planted at any time of the year, although it is advisable to avoid very dry and very wet months.
A quick word about growing wildflowers
The most common mistake when planting wildflower seeds is not getting rid of existing weed seeds that are in the soil and will germinate along with the wildflowers. The fast growing weeds and grasses smother the slower growing wildflowers so it is worth the effort to try and eliminate the competition. One way is to hand cultivate the soil to a depth of 3" or 4" and remove all weeds with a suitable herbicide and then cultivate the soil to a depth of not more than 1". Deeper cultivation exposes more weed seeds.
Simple Rules
Clear ground of all weed growth by either repeated cultivation or by using a herbicide.
Cultivate to create a fine seed bed
To help even distribution, mix with four times its volume of sand and broadcast by hand.
Firm down to create a good seed/soil contact and water. Do not allow soil to dry out.
In the first year we advise mowing the area at least twice to a height of approximately 10cm, remove the cuttings.
In the second year you must mow once at the end of the season when the flowers have set seed, usually mid September and again remove the cuttings.
Some useful points to remember
Some wildflower seeds may take a long time to get started and may germinate when weather conditions are more favourable later in the year.
Wildflowers prefer poor soil so fertilisers are unnecessary.
